The series finale of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel starts in San Francisco in 1965. Lenny does a stand-up routine, and it doesn’t go well. He is aimless on stage and quickly loses the audience’s attention. He’s no longer the Lenny he used to be. His sharpness has disappeared. He forgets pieces. He crumbles under the spotlight.

Susie looks at Lenny in horror. She can’t believe what she sees. Afterwards, Susie approaches Lenny and asks him to leave with her. She is Midge’s manager and can help her get back on her feet. She calls her stand-up a “fucking disgrace.”

Lenny doesn’t accept Susie’s offer. He doesn’t think he has a future in stand-up. Susie begs Lenny to reconsider. “Because you are Lenny Bruce. There will only ever be one of you. Let’s get it back,” Susie said. Lenny is called before he can give Susie a real answer. “Keep those favors. Use them for someone worthy,” he says. Before leaving, Lenny asks if Midge is there. Susie says no.

When Susie goes out, Midge is smoking a cigarette. Midge immediately asks about Lenny. “It’s a mess, Miriam,” she said. Midge doesn’t come in to see him, but she looks devastated as they leave Lenny behind. As we all know, Lenny will die a year later.

The episode returns to New York in 1961. Susie is currently sleeping on a park bench. She ends up getting arrested after fighting the police. Midge bails her out. Midge takes Susie out for coffee to get the whole story. Midge knows Susie is upset, but Susie is mute. Slowly but surely, Susie begins to talk about Hedy and her past. Susie moved to New York after Hedy returned from being engaged to Paris when they were younger. This is the first and the last time that Susie is in love.

Gordon reluctantly tells Midge that she’s going to be on the show… tonight. Midge runs straight to Susie to tell her the news. Apparently Hedy made the request.

Meanwhile, Moishe tells Joel that he is going to retire from the business. After a shower fall, he reconnected with Shirley. They sell the house and buy an apartment in Boca Raton as soon as they can walk again. Suddenly Joel gets a call from Midge about The Gordon Ford Show. Joel beams with pride. He gives Midge his blessing to talk about him during her routine if she needs to.

“Did I ever tell you you’re amazing?” she asks. Joel responds, “You have. A lot. More than I deserve. Midge wants Joel in the audience. Joel promises he will be there. “I’ll leave the tickets under ‘the one who got away’,” jokes Midge.

Abe rushes home to tell Rose that Midge is on. The Gordon Ford Show This evening. Rose isn’t amused and says she’s not going. Rose doesn’t believe Midge has been trying to call her all day like Abe says. Well, the phone was picked up. Midge enlisted Joel, Shirley and many others to try and get her hands on Rose all day. Once Rose realizes this, she and Abe hurriedly leave. There are no taxis available on the Upper West Side. They run down the street trying to catch a taxi. No amount of negotiation work. Rose even offers her wedding ring! They end up on the bus, which Rose would later call a “heartbreaking” experience.

Gordon decides to tear down Midge just as she was getting up. She doesn’t go to the show to perform. She has just become a writer. Susie runs after Gordon, but he doesn’t change his mind. Susie screams for Mike in the middle of the office. He doesn’t know what’s going on. She demands that he fix this. Gordon changed Midge’s moment to a piece of human interest at the last minute.

Midge gets ready and takes her to the stool. Joel wonders what’s going on, and Midge just shakes her head. Gordon begins interviewing Midge during the show. It’s very cut and dry. He calls her “writer-in-residence,” and he does it in an offensive way. Midge decides to shoot. Gordon cuts her off and goes to the commercial, even though he still has 4 minutes left.

Mike asks Gordon to make up for the lost 4 minutes. Joel goes to Susie’s to find out what’s going on. Susie thinks it’s all her fault because of Hedy’s situation. Mike tries to convince Gordon to let Midge do his thing. It’s just 4 minutes.

Midge leaves the stage to talk to Abe. He tells her that he is so proud of her no matter what. Rose is so grateful that Midge went to such lengths to get her here.

Midge returns to her seat and sees the microphone. She grabs Susie. These are the most important 4 minutes of his life. Midge thinks about doing something that could “ruin” her and Susie. Susie knows exactly what Midge means and agrees. “Boobs up,” Susie said. That’s all Midge needs to hear.

Midge takes a seat on the stool and tells Gordon that she “was never good at following the rules” before they went live. She takes the leap, jumps off the stool and grabs the mic. She gets her 4 minutes and shines. It’s a game-changing moment. The crowd goes wild for her.

“I think it’s inevitable that they’ll hate me when they grow up,” Midge says of her kids during the routine. His jokes all land. Even Gordon laughs. Everyone revolves around Midge.

“I want a great life. I want to experience everything. I want to break every rule there is,” Midge says. “They say ambition is an unattractive trait in a woman. Maybe. But you know what’s really unattractive? Wait for something to happen. Midge doesn’t wait. She’s walking straight to stardom. The crowd erupts.

After his stand-up, Gordon welcomes him to the chair and begins to interview him. He describes his routine as “tremendous”. Gordon admits he was wrong about her. He introduces her as “the magnificent, the magical, the marvelous Mrs. Maisel”. Midge blows Joel a kiss in the crowd. As the crowd continues to applaud Midge, Gordon whispers, “You’re fired.

Six months ago, Lenny tries to teach Midge how to become famous. It was a great night for both of them. Their only night together. She opens her fortune cookie, the same one she kept close to him and read again the night when everything changed for her.

They are going to watch an episode of Jeopardy: Tournament of Champions together, even if they are on separate coasts.

Midge tells Susie about her day. Midge wants Susie back to work. Susie has had her day. Midge and Susie bicker and laugh on the phone, just like old times. Just as it should always be.
