WH McCarthy climate adviser: Biden ‘pledged’ to oppose more drilling on public lands

On Wednesday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Hallie Jackson Reports,” White House National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy said, “President Biden remains absolutely committed to not going ahead with further drilling. on public lands. And said the Biden administration “had no choice” to come up with new drilling leases, “but it also found ways to reduce its size and impact.” She also said that “we are making an irreversible shift to clean energy that no court will block because we are doing it in a legally sound way.”

McCarthy said, “President Biden remains absolutely committed to not moving forward with any additional drilling on public lands. The challenge we faced was that we had a court order that a new lease be entered into. The Department of Energy had no choice but to shut it down, but they also found ways to reduce its scale and impact. And we will continue to do what we need to do to appeal those decisions and argue our case in court. Because we know there are laws that were written decades ago that challenge our current understanding of key issues that are advancing, and climate is certainly one of them. And President Biden has already made historic progress, not only putting us back in a leadership position internationally, but on the domestic front, we are making an irreversible shift to clean energy that no court will block because we do it in a legally sound way. But we also do it in such a way that the public understands that it is to their advantage. It creates jobs for them. This creates money saving opportunities for our families.
