Harry Redknapp believes there is nothing preventing West Ham from jumping into the Europa League and fighting for the Premier League top six this season.
The Hammers are set to embark on their 2021/22 European adventure, facing Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia on Thursday night – live on talkSPORT.
Seen as a nuisance to some, the second tier European competition created enormous excitement for West Ham loyalists, who flocked to the Maksimir Stadion in large numbers.
It rewards their sixth place finish last season, after Moyes’ side expected them to fight relegation.
Their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season, following an encouraging transfer window, means the Hammers are not just a one-season wonder.
Questions have been raised, however, by people like Sir Geoff Hirst about what Thursday night football on the continent could do to their national ambitions.
But Redknapp, the former West Ham boss who won the 1999 UEFA Intertoto Cup success, is backing the Hammers to do both this season.
“What a great adventure for West Ham, it’s great to see them again in Europe,” he told talkSPORT Breakfast.
“I’m sure the fans will love this and I hope to see them run and get deeper into the competition.
“There’s no reason they can’t. I think they’re a very good West Ham team. David Moyes did a great job there.
“It’s forward and up for West Ham, they look strong. I can definitely see them pushing to be in that top six against this year. “
