West Ham and Leverkusen to eighths, Marseille eliminated

The French Olympique de Marseille lost all hope of going ahead in the Europa League when they lost to Galatasaray (4-2) on Thursday, while other powerful clubs such as West Ham or Bayer Leverkusen assured their presence in the second round of the competition.

After 4 draws in the first four dates of group E, Jorge Sampaoli’s team finally lost in Turkey, and remains with four points to 7 of the Istanbul club and four of Lazio – they won 3-0 in Moscow against Lokomotiv-, when there is only one date left.

English West Ham, who beat Rapid (2-0) in Vienna, and Bayern Leverkusen, winner against Celtic Glasgow (3-2), secured their ticket to the round of 16 as leaders of their keys.

To reach the round of 16, Manuel Pellegrini’s Real Betis will have to overcome a tie against one of the third-placed teams in the Champions League groups.

The Betics beat the Hungarian Ferencvaros (2-0) at Benito Villamarín with goals from Cristian Tello (5) and Sergio Canales (52), and secured second place, but they will not be able to catch up with the leader Bayer Leverkusen.
