On Fox News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom” on Monday, Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) lamented that the United States had not done enough to help Ukraine during its war with Russia.
According to Gallagher, “we are continually late because we are afraid to provoke” Russian President Vladimir Putin. He urged the White House to “make Putin fearful” of what the United States might do to help Ukraine.
“I hope he will do everything possible to rally the West so that President Zelensky can negotiate from a position of strength,” Gallagher stressed. “It’s our job. Our job is to help Zelensky, who is doing an excellent job of rallying Ukraine by continuing to provide lethal assistance despite Putin’s threat. I would also like the President to fix the Polish MiG 29 fiasco and find a way to accept Slovakia’s offer to supply Russian-made S-300s to Ukraine.
He continued, “And while we should be wary of climbing, we cannot let the continual fear of climbing dominate our thinking. I think that’s why we got into this mess in the first place – because of the continual fear of provoking Putin, whether it was the administration’s over-year delay in providing lethal assistance, the reluctance of the Biden administration to impose sanctions, or this MiG fiasco. We are continually late because we are afraid of provoking Putin. And it’s time to make Putin fear what we are prepared to do to defend Ukraine. In other words: the best way to avoid World War III is to strengthen our military deterrent and invest in hard power. And that’s the message I hope to hear from President Biden when he travels.
