All westbound lanes of I-70 on the Missouri side of the state line remain closed at the Benton Curve, and will likely remain closed through the weekend, following a severe underbridge fire in the area Thursday. This fire at a homeless camp under an overpass on I-70 claimed the life of one individual. This person has not yet been identified. Engineers were concerned that the bridge suffered structural damage in the fire. An inspection revealed “extensive damage” to the beams under the center lane of I-70. to stabilize the center lane of this bridge, however, significant work will be required. Crews hope to be able to open the left lane and far right lane of I-70 by Monday morning, however, the center lane of I-70 will remain closed for some time. “With the Chiefs’ playoff game on Sunday night, fans should plan for the westbound I-70 lane closures,” said MoDOT KC district engineer Chris Redline. “More information will be provided on Sunday on when the two lanes will open as soon as we know.” Traffic should remain slow in the area. All inbound lanes from I-70 have been closed before 23rd Street and traffic is being rerouted by the Missouri Department of Transportation.

MoDOT said work has been done to stabilize the center lane of this bridge, but significant work will be required. Crews hope to be able to open the left lane and far right lane of I-70 by Monday morning, however, the center lane of I-70 will remain closed for some time.

“With the Chiefs’ playoff game on Sunday night, fans should plan for the westbound I-70 lane closures,” said MoDOT KC district engineer Chris Redline. “More information will be provided on Sunday on when the two lanes will open as soon as we know.”

Crews will also be closing the westbound on-ramp at 18th Street and 23rd Street to ease traffic flow. Traffic should remain slow in the area.
