Wayne Rooney recalls when Sir Alex Ferguson lost him with Roy Keane and ‘jumped over the desk’ to face him ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and the Man United squad

Wayne Rooney has lifted the veil on the row between Roy Keane and Sir Alex Ferguson that ended his Manchester United career.

The former Ireland international captained the Red Devils during his illustrious playing career and led his troops with an iron first during his 12 years at Manchester.

Tempestuous and self-motivated, Keane acted as Ferguson’s right-hand man on the pitch and proved a competent assistant winning 17 major trophies at Old Trafford, including the famous Treble in 1999.

Still, he left under somewhat acrimonious circumstances in 2005 after a nasty argument with Fergie, from which the couple have yet to recover.

Speaking to former cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew, Rooney admitted he was unaware of what had transpired between Sir Alex and David Beckham a few years before his arrival.

However, he was able to disclose what happened when Ferguson clashed with his seven-year-old captain, which led to Keane’s departure and subsequent transfer to Celtic.

“No, that was right before me,” he said of “Tony Bellew is angry”.

“So when Roy Keane left the club, I think it was well known that there was a reunion. I can’t say the details of what happened at the reunion… Roy obviously had tried some of the players on the club’s TV channel and Fergie wasn’t happy, so he called a meeting.

“Roy Keane said we were all watching together, so we all went to Alex Ferguson’s office – the coaches, Alex and the whole team. I was 18 or 19 [years old] at the time.

“We all watched, and Roy asked if any of the players had a problem, so everyone said no. To be fair, it wasn’t that bad; I think this was obviously a problem with Roy and the manager in the past.

“So anyway, it got into an argument, and a few different things were said, and I see Alex Ferguson jump over his desk, and I’m like ‘wow, this is crazy.’ He has jumped over the desk, he’s held back… it calmed down.

“Anyway, the next day Roy Keane went into practice, and then about 30 minutes later we saw him go, and that’s the last time we saw him.”
