WATCH: Pentagon press secretary John Kirby holds briefing as Russian forces move towards Kyiv

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said Russian forces were targeting Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital.

“We also saw Ukrainians resisting quite effectively around Kiev and continuously,” he said, making it harder for Russian troops to move south.

The first round of talks aimed at ending the fighting between Ukraine and Russia have ended with no agreement except to continue talking, while an increasingly isolated Moscow has been met with surprisingly fierce resistance on the ground and to economic havoc at home.

“It’s day five, and it’s clear the Russians haven’t made the progress they wanted to make by day five,” Kirby said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also put his nuclear forces on heightened alert on Sunday amid a major escalation in tensions with the West.

Kirby said the ad was “as unnecessary as it is escalating.”

The UN human rights chief said at least 102 civilians had been killed and hundreds injured in more than four days of fighting – warning that figure is likely an undercount – and the Ukrainian president said at least 16 children were among the dead.

Kirby called Russia’s invasion a “war of choice” against “a neighboring nation-state that posed no threat.”

“We know there are victims on both sides of this conflict,” he said. “All the blood is on Mr. Putin’s hands.”

More than half a million people have fled the country since the invasion, another UN official said, many of whom have traveled to Poland, Romania and Hungary. Millions of people have left their homes.
