At a press conference last week, Newsom teased the new approach “allows for the kind of flexibility of thinking that behooves all of us when it comes to managing any endemic, especially one as stubborn…as COVID.”

This will still include quarantines, testing for those without symptoms and other precautions, but those safeguards will vary depending on what he said are more than a dozen “guides and measures” designed to detect new virus surges and variants.

It will also include a continued focus on vaccinations and booster shots that can prevent serious illness, hospitalizations and deaths, he said.
