Around 800 protesters clashed with police in Germany on Friday as they attempted to break into a Tesla factory in a wooded area.
The protest was part of an effort to prevent a planned expansion of the Grueneheide factory near Berlin, which they fear could cause environmental problems, organizing group Disrupt Tesla said in a statement posted on its website. website.
“Here, activists highlight the Tesla Group as being responsible for the temptation of groundwater, resource theft, and endangering people on a global scale,” said Disrupt Tesla spokesperson, Ole Becker, in the press release.
The video shows dozens of protesters wearing blue hats and face masks attempting to storm Tesla’s premises while police use force to stop them. Medical personnel are seen on scene helping the injured.
“Why are the police letting left-wing protesters go so easily?” Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) responding to a post speculating that protesters had conspired under the banner of Antifa.
Several arrests made, few injuries reported
Police said all attempts to enter the factory were prevented and several people were arrested, according to Reuters.
Becker said the group also plans to highlight the environmental destruction caused by lithium mining in other countries like Argentina and Bolivia, Reuters reported. The metal is often used to power batteries in electric vehicles.
“We protect freedom of assembly, but we are also responsible for public order and security. This means that we will also intervene if necessary,” Brandenburg police spokesman Mario Heinemann told Reuters.
USA TODAY has contacted Tesla for comment on the incident.
