Watch 14 minutes of gameplay from Hogwarts Legacy, the next Harry Potter RPG

Hogwarts LegacyThe upcoming Harry Potter open-world RPG, got its first gameplay reveal from developer Avalanche Software ahead of its release date later this year during a special PlayStation State of Play stream that showed 14 minutes of footage from the game.

(Despite a Sony-hosted debut, Hogwarts Legacy is not a PlayStation exclusive and will also release on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/Series S in addition to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.)

Players will be able to create their own character, be sorted into one of four Hogwarts houses, and take classes (although they’ll start at Hogwarts as a final fifth-year student, presumably to avoid a serious RPG setting featured an 11 yr.-old.)

Combat will involve using different combinations of spells to exploit specific enemy weaknesses or abilities, with the ability to mix and match “dozens” of dueling spells. Players will also be able to customize their characters with gear and magical abilities as they progress through the game.

Hogwarts Legacy shares a large setting with other entries in the franchise, but given that the game is set in the 1800s – decades before the events of the original or more recent books fantastic beasts movie franchise – don’t expect to see too many familiar faces. Instead, the story will focus on a possible goblin rebellion against the wizarding world (something that happens with worrying regularity, it seems) and the usual setting of dark wizards and dangerous beasts.

Originally announced for a 2021 release date, Hogwarts Legacy was rescheduled to a 2022 date shortly after it was announced. The game has not lacked controversy: its main designer left the project because of controversial YouTube videos defending the Gamergate movement. Warner Bros. also had to explicitly state that Harry Potter creator JK Rowling is not directly involved with the game following a series of online transphobic comments from the author. “JK Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game, however, her extraordinary writing is the basis of all projects in the wizarding world,” the company wrote. “This is not a new JK Rowling story.”

Hogwarts Legacy is coming to PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/Series S this holiday season.
