Wasted USA held to goalless draw by England

A young United States side dominated England in their World Cup Group B battle but suffered a flurry of missed chances and a poor finish in both halves after having to settle for 0-0 draw at Al Bayt Stadium on Friday.

England, unchanged from Monday’s 6-2 win over Iran, could have sealed their place in the knockout stage with a win but were careless in possession and struggled to dominate the Americans , who gradually gained confidence.

Tim Weah set up Weston McKennie with a measured cross but the midfielder overshot his effort before Christian Pulisic’s powerful strike beat goalkeeper Jordan Pickford but crashed into the crossbar in a display animated in the first half of the Americans.

England’s closest to breaking the deadlock was on the eve of half-time when United States goalkeeper Matt Turner denied Mason Mount, while captain Harry Kane endured a frustrating night up front as the Gareth Southgate’s team were scrambling to earn a share of the spoils.
