Washington Post columnist breaks down Trump’s joke about people hating their kids

In Philip Bump’s latest column for The Washington Post, the commentator suggests it’s because Trump “understands, if only intuitively, how anxious his base feels about young Americans, including those with whom they happen to be related”.
The subtext of Trump’s comments is that “a lot of Trump supporters are really suspicious of their own children and grandchildren,” given the widening gap in support for Republicans between older and younger Americans, a Bump argues.
The comments “go to something deeper,” he said. It’s “a feeling that young Americans might ‘justifiably’ be unloved by their parents.”
“Maybe your kids are Democrats who voted for Joe Biden. Do you want to give them your farm? Boom concluded. “The answer here is simple: these kids probably don’t want the farm anyway.”
