Walmart security guard injured in struggle with shoplifters at Olympia Fields

CHICAGO (SCS) — A Walmart security guard was hospitalized after he apparently banged his head on the ground while struggling with three robbers at the store in the southern suburb of Olympia Fields, and shot him while the fray.

Olympia Fields Police Chief Derrick Blassingame said around 9:45 a.m. officers responded to a call for shots fired at the Walmart at Western Avenue and Lincoln Highway.

Upon arrival, officers found a security guard with head injuries.

Blassingame said that while the incident is still under investigation, the guard was likely injured while battling three shoplifters. A shot was fired during the incident, but the guard was not shot.

The guard, a woman in her 20s, was taken to St. James Franciscan Hospital in Olympia Fields, where she was in good condition.

No one else was hurt

Police are looking for the three shoplifters, who fled the scene in a car after the incident.

“It was an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the community,” Blassingame said.

A Walmart spokesperson said he was “deeply disturbed” by the incident and will work closely with police during their investigation.

The Walmart was closed the day after the incident, but will reopen at 6 a.m. on Sunday.
