Walmart Comes After Kanye West’s Yeezy Logo

The retail giant filed a notice of objection on April 21 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, contesting a trademark application filed by Kanye West’s clothing brand, Yeezy. “Walmart believes the logo design depicted in the Yeezy app is similar to Walmart’s well-known Spark logo design,” according to a letter the company provided to CNN Business.

Both logos look like a sun: Walmart’s logo has thick lines that look like rays from the sun, and Yeezy’s proposed logo has lines made up of a set of dots that also look like sunlight.

According to the letter from Walmart, the company contacted Yeezy in July and August 2020 and again in each of the first three months of this year. “To date, we have not received any conclusive information from Yeezy regarding Yeezy’s intended use or any cooperation in finding common ground,” the letter said.

Walmart has used the sun logo since 2007 and Yeezy filed documents for its proposed logo in January 2020.

Kanye West has made a lot of money from his fashion business. The rapper-turned-shoe mogul is now worth $ 6.6 billion, and the vast majority of his fortune is tied to his clothing businesses. West’s Yeezy sneaker partnership with Adidas and his clothing line with Gap are worth between $ 3.2 billion and $ 4.7 billion, according to a UBS report released in February.

The Yeezy team has yet to respond to a request for comment from CNN Business.
