Volodymyr Zelensky says he never thought defending freedom would be ‘so costly’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his people were fighting for freedom against Russia’s attacks on civilians during an interview inside a government building in Kyiv.

“They say we stand for Western values,” Zelenskyy told CBS’s “60 Minutes” for Sunday’s broadcast. “I always say, what are Western values? Doesn’t someone who lives in the United States or Europe like children either? Don’t they want their kids to go to college, don’t they want their grandfather to live to be 100? We have the same values.

“I never thought this right was so expensive,” he added.

When asked to describe what he saw with his own eyes to Bucha, Zelenskyy replied, “Death, just death.”

Russia has denied committing atrocities and blamed the Bucha murders on Ukraine.
