Volkswagen will keep its factory in operation in China’s Xinjiang region

HONG KONG-volkswagen reiterated its commitment to producing vehicles in the western region of Xinjiang, an area where Western politicians, academics and human rights groups say Beijing is forcibly assimilating ethnic minorities.

The German automaker plans to keep its Xinjiang plant in operation and is open to a factory tour by a human rights expert recently appointed by the company’s board of directors, stephan wollenstein, the outgoing CEO of Volkswagen China said on Friday. He said the decision to continue operating the plant, which is operating at reduced levels, was taken following discussion with Volkswagen’s Chinese joint venture partner, state-owned SAIC Group.
