Telecommunications operator Vodafone Idea Ltd (VIL) said on Friday it reached speeds of around 4 gigabits per second during ongoing 5G trials. The speed was achieved in the spectral band of 26 gigahertz, or millimeter band, which is offered for sale at future auctions.
“We were able to achieve a speed of 4.2 Gbps in millimeter band during the test,” said Jagbir Singh, CTO of VIL. The company has conducted 5G trials in Gandhinagar with Nokia and in Pune with Ericsson.
Singh said the government has extended 5G trials for six months and will continue until May 2022 or until the outcome of spectrum auctions, whichever comes first. Regulatory and Corporate Director General P Balaji said the trial has been extended until May, but the government has yet to release a timetable for the spectrum auctions.
VIL demonstrated the use case of 5G for remote medical diagnostics, cloud gaming, public safety, emergency services using drones, and more.
