Virus: international aid floods into India – world

India, still deploring nearly 400,000 new cases of covid-19 and a record of deaths in 24 hours (3,689), continued to receive medical aid from abroad, this Sunday, intended to relieve hospitals saturated with patients lacking oxygen.

This Sunday, a cargo plane chartered by France landed in New Delhi with 28 tons of medical equipment on board, including eight large-capacity oxygen generators. “India helped us last year in French hospitals, when the need for drugs was enormous. The French people remember it ”, declared this Sunday, Emmanuel Lenain (below), the French ambassador to India.

This equipment can also fill bottles with a flow rate of 20,000 liters per hour, each plant being able to continuously supply an Indian hospital with 250 beds without interruption for ten years, the French authorities said in a press release.

These oxygen plants are to be delivered on Sunday to eight Indian hospitals, six in Delhi, one in Haryana state (north) and one in Telangana state (center).

A US military plane carrying medical supplies landed in New Delhi on Friday, and a German plane followed on Saturday. The United Kingdom, for its part, has announced that it will send 1,000 additional respirators to this vast country of 1.3 billion people.

India on Saturday opened vaccination against covid-19 to its entire adult population, some 600 million people. But several states, including Maharashtra and New Delhi – among the most affected – have already warned of running out of vaccines.

In an attempt to ease the pressure on health services, the authorities in New Delhi have announced the extension of a week of confinement, which was to end on Monday, in the megalopolis of 20 million inhabitants.
