Video | Atlanta Rolling Pedal Pub Crash

Watch the moment passers-by rushed to help after a “Pedal Pub” overturned in the middle of Midtown Atlanta.

ATLANTA — Newly released surveillance video shows the moment bystanders in downtown Atlanta sprang into action after a “Pedal Pub” rollover accident in downtown Atlanta.

Atlanta police released the jaw-dropping video of Saturday’s crash Monday, showing the vehicle colliding with a tree and then flipping over at the busy intersection of West Peachtree Street and 14th Street.

The video shows several people jumping from the “Pedal Pub”. Then passers-by in the area are captured rushing to the scene and springing into action. Several people work together to lift the vehicle and turn it upright, freeing those who might be trapped below.

You can watch the video below. Audience discretion is advised, as some viewers may find the video disturbing.

More than 15 people were injured in the wreckage and taken to hospital, including two people with serious injuries and three people in serious condition, Atlanta police said. Officials said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

A day after the sinking, authorities charged Pedal Pub driver James Anthony Johnson, 28, with impaired driving in the incident. Police said the owner of the “Pedal Pub” company also received a citation for not having a valid visitor’s permit.

Page Pate, legal analyst for 11Alive, believes the accident could set a legal precedent for pedal pubs across the country.

“I expect this will lead to more stringent regulation and enforcement of ordinances already in place, and perhaps some cities, including Atlanta, might reconsider having this type of operation,” Pate said.

11Alive has reached out to the Pedal Pub Atlanta franchise for comment, but has yet to receive a response. Company headquarters responded with this statement from Todd Treml, President of Pedal Pub Development, LLC:

“The safety of our customers is our top priority, so we were shocked and saddened to learn of the situation involving one of Atlanta’s independently owned and operated franchises. Pedal Pub Development is grateful to the bystanders and first responders who rushed into action. We will continue to follow updates regarding the Atlanta franchise, keeping everyone affected in our thoughts and prayers.
