Vandal filmed cutting and damaging security cameras at West Lawn

CHICAGO (CBS) – Residents of the West Lawn community are livid after someone drove through their alley and cut or damaged home security cameras.

Nevertheless, these crimes were themselves filmed.

As CBS 2’s Tim McNicholas reported, security video sent to us shows that someone shot down a camera around 8 a.m. Friday. Another clip shows two other damaged cameras nearby.

“They are causing a lot of material damage,” said a resident who asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals.

He said his camera was damaged, and he later heard from several other people at West Lawn who were also affected.

“I’m thinking eight, eight different houses – because that’s eight different videos I’ve been able to see,” the man said.

One image appears to show the vandal holding some sort of knife to cut the ropes.

“He looked, I would say, between 13 and 18, honestly. He looked very young,” the man said, “and for him to be caught doing something like that, it’s not just isn’t right.”

The man fears the cameras have been cut because local criminals don’t want to be caught up in a bigger crime.

“I think if it was gang related, someone else told him to do it so they could coordinate something else,” the man said.

We learned that about 18 hours after some of those cameras were cut, police responded to a call for shots fired in that same area. Some neighbors wonder if this may have a connection.

Police say they found no damage or gunshot victims, but did find two shell casings.
