Valor Games Honors Veterans at Soldier Field Across Chicago This Week

CHICAGO (SCS) — These are the men and women who sacrificed and suffered injury protecting the United States and now they are celebrated for their service while showing off their athletic skills at the 10th Annual Valor Games.

At Soldier Field, the Chicago Park District kicked off the three-day event with the shot put.

The games celebrate disabled, injured, ill or injured service members who use sport to empower the community.

“It gives us a sense of camaraderie. We have the chance to compete in fun. So we are all winners because we have all served our country. Brothers and sisters who have lost limbs but can still come out here and It just goes to show that life can be tough and difficult, but you can still thrive and succeed,” said U.S. Navy veteran and participant Jason Ferguson. “At the end of the day, I’m here to get medals from gold.”

Later on Tuesday afternoon, it is the rowing and weightlifting competitions. The Valor Games travel to Lincoln Park on Wednesday for archery and cycling events. On Thursday, table tennis and biathlon will take place at McKinley Park.
