USWNT captain Lindsey Horan nominated for FIFA Best Player

Lindsey Horan, captain of the United States women’s national team and midfielder for Olympique Lyonnais, was one of 16 players nominated Thursday for the FIFA Best Player award. Horan was the only American nominated for this award.
The FIFA Best Women’s Player award – formerly known as FIFA Women’s Player of the Year – is an award given to the player who has demonstrated exemplary performance on and off the field over the course of a year civil. The award is voted on by four groups: coaches, team captains, specialist journalists and fans. Each group represents a quarter of those surveyed, according to FIFA.
Horan had an exceptional year professionally. Since joining the French club on loan from Portland Thorns FC, Horan has won the last two Women’s Division 1 titles, a Champions League title in 2021 and a domestic cup in 2023. She has also scored eight goals in 37 appearances for the club. In June, Lyon and the Thorns reached an agreement to make Horan’s deal permanent through 2026.
Horan’s club form continued through to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where she scored two goals in the group stage, including a massive goal that gave a point in the United States against a tough Dutch team. The United States was eliminated from the 2023 Women’s World Cup in the round of 16.
The winner of the Best FIFA Women’s Player award will be announced at the Best FIFA Football Awards in early 2024.
