According to the secretary of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, the recent airstrikes carried out by the United States in Syria “reinforce and extend” the activities of Daesh in the region.

On February 27, 2021, during a meeting with the Iraqi Foreign Minister visiting Iran, the secretary of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said that “America’s recent action is strengthening and expanding activities of [groupe] terrorist Daesh in the region ”. He was referring to the recent American strikes in Syria, which the United States said targeted pro-Iranian militia infrastructure.

“The attack on the anti-terrorist resistance forces is the start of a new cycle of organized terrorism,” added the senior Iranian official, while promising to “face the US plan to revive terrorism in the region – without however specifying how.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry had also condemned these American strikes, described as “cowardly aggression” against the “sovereignty” of Syria, and “flagrant violation of the rules of international law and the Charter of the United Nations”.
