US responds to Russian bioweapons claims – RT World News

Washington insists it does not operate any chemical or biological labs in Ukraine

The United States has rejected Moscow’s claim that it is helping to operate “biolabs” in Ukraine working with very dangerous pathogens. Russia claimed Kiev was working to destroy the materials and cover up a possible breach of the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention (BWC).

“The United States does not own or operate any chemical or biological laboratories in Ukraine, it is in full compliance with its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Biological Weapons Convention, and it does not develop or possess any such weapons nowhere”, U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said Thursday.

The US official argued that Moscow, not Washington, was running “active chemical and biological weapons programs”, but refrained from citing evidence in his statement.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki echoed Price’s remark, also accusing Moscow of laying the groundwork for a potential “false flag” attack, a charge previously made by administration officials.

“We should all be on the lookout for Russia possibly using chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine or creating a false flag operation using them,” she said in a Twitter post on Wednesday.

PSAKI argued that Russia “has a habit of blaming the West for the very violations that Russia itself is committing.” She called the latest allegations “an obvious ploy by Russia to try to justify the new premeditated, unprovoked and unjustified attack on Ukraine.”

Washington’s denials came hours after the Russian Foreign Ministry called for strengthening the international biological weapons treaty by adding a mechanism to verify compliance by member countries. The Russian military said on Monday that Ukrainian authorities had ordered the “precipitate” destruction of dangerous pathogens stored in US-supported biological laboratories in the former Soviet republic.

US Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland acknowledged on Tuesday that Ukraine has “biological research facilities”. Speaking under oath in a Senate hearing, she said U.S. officials “pretty worried” that Russian forces may seek to take control of the laboratories, and have been “working” with Kyiv to prevent this from happening.
