US Open tee times: first-round groups confirmed for day one
S

Jon Rahm of Pain will start early in his attempt to successfully defend his US Open title at Brookline.

Rahm, who won his first major at Torrey Pines last year with birdies on the last two holes, will tee off at 07:18 local time (1218BST) on Thursday, alongside Open champion Collin Morikawa and amateur winner American 2021 James Piot.

Rory McIlroy, who successfully defended his RBC Canadian Open title on Sunday, is also among the early starters from the 10th tee, the world number three joined by former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama and Olympic gold medalist Xander Heat at 0740.

US PGA Champion Justin Thomas teeed off at 1.14pm local time (6.14pm BST) alongside Viktor Hovland and Tony Finau, with England’s Matt Fitzpatrick two groups behind with Webb Simpson and Dustin Johnson.

Phil Mickelson, who must win the US Open to complete the career grand slam, kicks off his campaign at 1.47pm local time (6.47pm BST) alongside Shane Lowry and Louis Oosthuizen.

Three-time winner Tiger Woods is not on the court after opting to give his body more time to recover ahead of the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews next month.

Woods was clearly suffering from the leg he nearly lost in a car accident in February last year before retiring from the US PGA Championship after a third-round 79.
