US drone forced over the Black Sea may never be recovered | ukraine news

The MQ-9 Reaper drone that the US military says was forced over the Black Sea by a Russian fighter jet on March 14 has not been recovered – and it may never be.

That’s according to John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator at the National Security Council, Ukrinform reports with reference to CNN.

“I’m not sure that we will be able to recover it. I mean, where it fell in the Black Sea, in very, very deep waters. We are still evaluating if there can be a recovery effort. maybe- be not,” Kirby said.

He said the United States had done its best to downplay any intelligence value that might come from someone else getting their hands on this drone.

“I certainly can’t speak to the Russian efforts or what they’re trying or not trying to get off the surface of the water. I can just tell you that we’re still assessing this situation ourselves,” Kirby said.

Kirby reiterated that it is “not uncommon” for Russian jets to attempt to intercept or harass American drones.

The Russian Defense Ministry denied that the Russian plane came into contact with the drone in a statement on Tuesday, saying fighter jets ‘rushed to identify the intruder’ after spotting it overhead. from the Black Sea, adding that the drone “entered an unguided flight with loss of altitude.”

Kirby said Wednesday morning: “First of all, they don’t belong in Ukraine. Second, they certainly don’t belong in Crimea. And we were flying, again, way outside the airspace claimed by Ukraine or any other country. The Black Sea does not belong to Russia. … We will continue to operate, again, in full compliance with international law.”
