US Bishops Launch Intensive Prayer Campaign to Protect Unborn Life

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has launched a 9-day prayer campaign for the protection of unborn human life as the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade.

“Life begins at conception and deserves to be protected,” says the USCCB’s Office of Pro-Life Activities, announcing its “9 Days to Life” novena, which will run Jan. 19-27.

The 9-day prayer crusade is timed to encompass January 23, the commemoration of the fateful 1973 Supreme Court ruling in Roe vs. Wade only with Family planning c. Casey makes unfettered abortion on demand the law of the land.

The bishops note that 9 days for life “is an annual novena for the protection of human life” with the intention of each day “accompanied by a short reflection and suggested actions to help build a culture of life”.

The novena text includes prayers for an end to “the tragic practice of abortion”, which “rejects the truth that every life is a good and perfect gift, deserving of protection”.

“This violent practice ends the life of a human being in its very early stages and horribly injures everyone involved,” the document said.

“Abortion has ended the lives of countless children, and countless parents and family members suffer from guilt, grief and regret, often in silence,” the text states, while reiterating the belief in God’s abundant mercy even for the greatest of sins.

The document also claims that since the time of creation, “contempt for human life has continued to spread.”

“When we, like Cain, allow sin to find a place in our hearts, we become blind to the truth,” it reads. “Sometimes this blindness can be so deep that we fail to recognize the undeniable humanity of unborn children. We can even tragically believe in the lie that abortion is an act of compassion. “

In the prayer campaign, the bishops also make specific reference to American law and the nation’s founding principles.

“The Declaration of Independence boldly asserts that the first of our inalienable rights is the right to life, given to us by the Creator,” she says. “Yet, despite its solemn proclamation, the right to life is today threatened and often denied, especially at times when life is most fragile.

“Our laws should above all protect life,” he continues. “But our highest court does not recognize the children in their mother’s womb as individuals and asserts that abortion is a constitutional right. “

“Those who work as public officials and civic leaders have a duty to serve the common good, and therefore have a deep obligation to safeguard this most basic right to life,” he adds, noting that “There can be no true democracy without recognition of the dignity of every person and without respect for their rights.

The novena material also includes resources for further reading and research, as well as specific prayer suggestions to end abortion.
