INDIANAPOLIS – At least eight people were killed in a shooting at a FedEx warehouse in Indianapolis on Thursday night, and the shooter allegedly committed suicide, police said.

Officer Genae Cook of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department told reporters on Friday morning that there were “several people with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.” Eight people died, not counting the gunman, she said.

Others had been “transported to various hospitals in the region,” added Agent Cook. She said those at the scene were still being questioned by detectives and may not have had a chance to contact their families.

Constable Cook said police were still working to identify the shooter and no law enforcement officer was injured.

“It will last a long time in the morning,” she added.

Previously, Agent Cook had asked people who were unable to contact family members who worked at FedEx to assemble at a Holiday Inn Express about a mile from the warehouse, adding that representatives from the The police department’s chaplain’s office would be there to help them.

Around 2:45 a.m. on Friday, before the deaths were announced, the mood was grim at the hotel, with around 110 people anxiously awaiting news. FedEx employees are not allowed to use their phones on the warehouse floor, so those gathered had not heard from loved ones.

One of those in the lobby, Pardeep Sidhu from Plainfield, Indonesia, said her aunt and uncle worked at the facility and a friend’s husband, 45, had been there beaten down.

Christina Valor said she learned of the shooting from the news and was driven to the hotel because her sister, Natalie Valor, was working there and had not been in contact there.

“We hope for the best,” she said. “But we don’t know anything.”

The FedEx warehouse where the shooting took place is on the southwest side of town, near the airport.

“We are aware of the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility near the Indianapolis airport,” Jim Masilak, a FedEx spokesperson, said in a statement Friday morning. “Safety is our top priority and our hearts go out to all concerned. We are working to collect more information and are cooperating with investigating authorities. “

Constable Cook told reporters that police arrived at the scene just after 11 p.m., responding to a report that shots had been fired. They encountered an “active shooter incident,” she said.

Traffic on a nearby portion of Interstate 70 was briefly closed, Sgt. John Perrine of the Indiana State Police written on twitter.

A reporter from WRTV, an Indianapolis station, posted an interview on Twitter with a man who said he was in the facility when the shooting broke out and subsequently saw a body on the ground.

WISH, another local station, quoted warehouse worker Jeremiah Miller as saying he heard up to 10 gunshots after he finished his shift.

“It made me get up and look out the front door, and I saw a man with some kind of machine gun, an automatic rifle, and he was shooting in the open air,” Miller told the station. . “I immediately got down and got scared and my friend’s mom, she came in and told us to get in the car.

The attack in Indianapolis on Thursday came after a series of mass shootings across the United States in recent weeks:

  • In mid-March, eight people were shot and killed at three Atlanta-area massage parlors, raising concerns that the crimes may have targeted people of Asian descent.

  • Less than a week later, 10 people were killed when a gunman opened fire on a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado.

  • In late March, a gunman killed four people, including a 9-year-old boy, in a Southern California real estate office.

  • Last week, a neighbor shot and killed a doctor, the doctor’s wife and their two grandchildren inside their home in Rock Hill, South Carolina, as well as an air conditioning technician who worked at outside the house, authorities said.
