Unlikely allies Viktor Orbán and Donald Tusk denounce EU migration deal – POLITICO

While the agreement was hailed as historic by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, it was sharply criticized by others, notably NGOs, alongside far-right and far-left MEPs.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has vehemently rejected the idea of a relocation mechanism, which would transfer migrants from frontline countries to other EU member countries, promising to find a way to exempt the Poland.

“We will find… ways so that even if this agreement comes into force more or less in the form in which it was voted on today in Parliament, we will protect Poland from the relocation mechanism,” Tusk said to journalists on Wednesday.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also lambasted the agreement on social media, calling it “another nail in the coffin of the European Union.”

“Unity is dead, secure borders are no longer. Hungary will never give in to the mass migratory frenzy! » said Orbán. “We need a change in Brussels to #StopMigration! »

Budapest and Warsaw have long led the fight against the migration deal, threatening – and sometimes succeeding – to derail its progress.

But the former allies have drifted apart since the election of Tusk, a center-right former European Council president who ousted Orbán’s nationalist friends in Warsaw, as Polish prime minister late last year , which makes their agreement unlikely.

EU member countries must now approve the legislation.
