UNCW hosts Charleston in annual Play4Kay game
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women’s basketball team begins a three-game homestand to end the regular season Sunday afternoon in their annual Play4Kay game against Charleston at Trask Coliseum.
The announcement of the Colonial Athletic Association game is scheduled for 2 p.m. The match can be streamed on FloHoops with John Smist and Tom Lamont calling the action. As usual, live stats will be available at UNCWStats.com.
Both teams come in after midweek setbacks on Wednesday night. The Seahawks (3-22 overall, 0-14 in CAA) fell to Elon, 64-43. The Cougars (14-12 overall, 6-9 in the league) suffered a 73-61 loss on the road at Hofstra.
senior guard Carrie Gross has averaged 11.5 points in its last six games. The Clinton, Maryland product has topped double digits in four of his last six appearances, including a game-high 16 points against the Phoenix on Wednesday.
Charleston guard Jenna Annecchiarico, sixth in CAA scoring, exploded for 29 points against the Pride last time out. The Baldwin, NY product converted 87.3 percent (110 of 126) of his free throws to lead the homer.
In the last meeting, the Cougars exploded for 24 unanswered first-quarter points to pull away from the Seahawks, 87-59, in Charleston on Jan. 30.
After Allie Best sank a three-pointer at the nine-minute mark to give the Seahawks a brief 5-1 advantage, the Cougars beefed up the defense and had 24 straight points in seven minutes to move to a 25-5 cushion and never looked backward.
The Seahawks continue their three-game home game on Thursday, March 3, with a 7 p.m. caution against Northeastern.
