UNCW cannot close series opener

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Elon’s Luke Stephenson tied the game with a home run in the top of the ninth and a wild, goal-laden pitch pushed through the eventual winning run as UNCW fell in extra innings to the Phoenix, 2- 1, at Brooks Field on Friday.

The Phoenix improved to 4-9 in the Colonial Athletic Association and 19-21 overall while the Seahawks fell to 8-5 in the league and 23-17 with their second straight loss at home.

Both starters pitched well but did not feature in the decision. Elon’s Brian Edgington held UNCW to one run over 6.2 innings while RJ Sales pitched 7.1 shutout innings for the Seahawks.

Matt Suggs hit his 10th homer for the Seahawks. For Stephenson, it was his ninth.

Ethan Chenault (1-5) took the loss in relief as Ben Simon improved to 2-0 with 2.1 shutout innings on one hit.

How did it happen: In the top of the 10th, Chenault hit a batter with one out and Charlie Graatell followed with a left double. Connor Coolahan won a walk to load bases. Anthony Iadisernia struck, but the pitch was unmanaged and the go-ahead scored from third.

Inside the box score:Teams combined to go 0-14 with RISP…Elon had two hits with runners while the Seahawks were hitless…UNCW pitchers only allowed one lead hitter to reach the base, this one entering the eighth of the sales.

Home runs: UNCW- Matt Suggs (10, one out, bases empty in the fifth inning, 364 feet left, bike out 102 mph); Elon – Luke Stephenson (9, one out, bases empty in the ninth inning, 370 feet left, bike out at 98 mph)

Following: The series continues with a departure at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
