Ukraine wants to cancel its foreign debt — RT Business News

Ukraine has called on international financial organizations to cancel the country’s foreign debts, citing the destruction of the country caused by the Russian military offensive which began last Thursday.

The extent of the destruction in Ukraine… is colossal! In view of this, our external creditors must be required to cancel Ukraine’s debts. To date, the external debt is 1,600 billion hryvnia, or more than 57 billion dollars.

International financial organizations should review the debt policy and eliminate Ukraine’s debts!“, wrote the head of the Accounts Chamber of Ukraine, Valeriy Patskan, on Tuesday on his Facebook page.

Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine last Thursday. President Vladimir Putin said his goal was “the protection of people who have been victims of intimidation and genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years, referring to the bombardment of the two Donbass republics, which broke away from Ukraine in 2014.

The Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly stated that its armed forces only target Ukrainian military infrastructure and troops, not the civilian population. However, many Western states view the military operation as a “unprovoked” aggression against Ukraine, hitting Moscow with sanctions.
