kyiv (AP) — Russia launched a wave of explosive missile and drone attacks on Ukraine on Thursday, Ukrainian authorities reported.

Air raid sirens sounded across the country, though there were no immediate reports of injuries or the targets of shells and drones.

The head of kyiv’s local government said 15 cruise missiles had been shot down.

The missiles were launched “in the direction of kyiv,” said Serhii Popko, who did not say whether the target was the capital itself. The city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said explosions had been heard in the Dniprovskyi district, on the eastern bank of the river that divides the city.

The attacks came a day after Germany and the United States announced they would send advanced main battle tanks to Ukraine, what one expert described as an “impact armored force” that would help kyiv break the battlefield stalemate. as the Russian invasion approached its 12th month.

Training of the tanks for Ukrainian troops could begin in the next few days, the German Defense Minister said on Thursday.

The teams will begin learning how to operate the German-made Leopard 2 model at a training center in Germany in late January, Boris Pistorius said.

The tanks themselves are expected to arrive in Ukraine before the end of March, Pistorius added.
