British energy giant Shell will not be able to buy Russian gas because of London’s anti-Russian sanctions, Dmitry Peskov, press secretary to Russian President Vladimir Putin, told media on Saturday.
“London wants to be the leader in all things anti-Russian. He even wants to get ahead of Washington! It’s the cost!Peskov pointed out.
He was referring to the fact that the UK is the only country to have imposed sanctions on the Russian bank Gazprombank, through which payments for Russian natural gas are made. The measure effectively deprives Britain of the ability to pay for the goods.
On March 31, Putin signed an executive order requiring gas buyers to “hostile countries” to open special accounts in rubles and foreign currency with Gazprombank to pay for gas supplies. They will transfer foreign currency funds to Gazprombank, which will buy rubles on the stock exchange and transfer them to buyers’ ruble accounts to make payments to Russian suppliers.
