The US Treasury simultaneously said it was “sanctioning more than a dozen entities, individuals and vessels that played a central role in facilitating and financing the clandestine sale of Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles.”
“The Iranian regime’s dangerous attack on Israel risks causing thousands of civilian casualties and leading to wider escalation in the region,” British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “Today, the UK and our partners have sent a clear message: we will hold those responsible for Iran’s destabilizing behavior to account.”
The UK and US imposed sanctions on Iran last week, again mainly linked to Iranian drone production. The sanctions do not target Iran’s lucrative oil industry.
The British government announced on Thursday that it also plans to extend trade sanctions against Iran by banning the export of components used in the production of drones and missiles.
