UK to ban Russian oil imports – POLITICO

LONDON — The United Kingdom will ban the import of Russian oil in protest against the invasion of Ukraine, and Washington is expected to do the same.

An announcement is expected to be made this afternoon, according to three Whitehall officials who spoke to POLITICO.

However, it looks increasingly unlikely that the EU will announce its own ban, due to fears of runaway inflation and retaliation from the Russians.

There will be a delay of several months before the ban to allow the global market to adjust and prevent people from panic buying petrol, British officials have said. Ministers will stress that the public will not need to stock up on fuel as Russian oil makes up a minimal share of Britain’s energy mix.

This announcement is actually a political protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine in an effort to put pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

There will be no ban on Russian gas at the same time, but officials confirmed the issue is still under discussion by the UK government.
