UK inflation hits 40-year high, putting government on the defensive

LONDON—The UK’s annual inflation rate hit its highest level in forty years in April, the highest level recorded by an industrialized country since the global price spike began last year.

Consumer prices in April were 9% higher than a year earlier, a jump of 7% in March and the highest rate of inflation since March 1982, the Office for National Statistics said. The pace is now the fastest recorded by any of the wealthy Group of Seven economies in about a year.
