UK has ‘deadly’ new weapons plan for Ukraine – media – RT World News

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson reportedly told his cabinet on Tuesday that he wanted to supply Ukraine “more deadly” military aid to help the country repel the Russian attack, the Times reported on Wednesday, citing a government source.

Western countries have urgently supplied arms to Ukraine after Moscow launched its military campaign on February 24. kyiv, however, has repeatedly asked for more help, arguing that the current level of support is not enough.

Admiral Tony Radakin, Chief of the Defense Staff, reportedly said at the same meeting that the UK was heading towards a “new phase” of its support for Ukraine.

According to the report, Boris Johnson did not specify what weapons he had in mind. A defense source told the media that Ukraine needs “longer range deep fires”, including heavy artillery.

British Army AS-90 self-propelled guns were described as an option, but the source noted that these were old systems, due for replacement in 2026.

The Times said the prime minister was also impressed with kyiv’s use of Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 attack drones, and was “I want the United States to provide Ukraine with more advanced anti-ship missiles and air defense systems.”

Last week, Johnson promised 6,000 anti-tank and “highly explosive” missiles in Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, however, asked NATO “one percent” of its tanks and planes. He also repeatedly urged the US-led bloc to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine, meaning Western powers would have to shoot down Russian fighter jets. NATO declined the request, fearing an open war with Moscow.

Moscow attacked Ukraine in late February, after a seven-year standoff over kyiv’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements and Russia’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics in Donetsk and Luhansk. The Minsk Protocol negotiated by Germany and France was designed to regularize the status of regions within the Ukrainian state.

Russia has now demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join NATO. kyiv says the Russian offensive was unprovoked and has denied claims it planned to retake the two republics by force.
