UK Energy Minister Graham Stuart quits government ahead of election – POLITICO

Instead, the MP for Beverly and Holderness said he wanted to focus on “campaigning on local issues” and looked forward to “fighting and winning the seat later this year”.

Stuart has a majority of almost 20,000 votes, although recent poll analysis has shown Labor could narrowly win the seat at the next general election, expected in the autumn.

He said: “It has been a great joy and privilege to serve as a minister for the best part of the last eight years. I am proud of everything we have achieved as a government, including being the first major economy to halve its CO2 emissions.”

Stuart was appointed Minister of State for Energy Security and Net Zero in the new DESNZ last February and represented the UK at the COP 28 climate summit in Dubai in December.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak thanked him for his service, saying: “I understand your desire to resign as minister. These jobs are very demanding and you have been in government almost continuously since 2016.”

Stuart’s previous government roles include Minister for Europe and Deputy Whip.

The government has not yet announced who will replace Stuart at DESNZ.
