UFC 273: Undefeated Irish star Ian Garry sends message to Dana White after impressive win over Darian Weeks and hopes to one day share UFC card with Conor McGregor
Ian Garry moves to 9-0 as the promising Irishman picked up another win at UFC 273.
Garry was in near total control as he rode to a 29-28, 30-27, 30-27 unanimous decision victory over his American foe.
After the fight, Garry told Dana White to line up the opponents and they’ll call him “dad”.
Garry started by working out and given his four-inch height advantage, it was no surprise that he looked to make good use of his length.
Despite being 6ft 3in tall, the Irishman’s movement is one of his best assets and he has a range of kicks he can unleash just about anywhere.
Garry tried to assert himself in the first round, but Weeks was more interested in exerting his strength in the clinch, despite his reputation as a knockout hitter.
In round two, Garry started touching Weeks more. Other than a nice left hook when the pair broke from a clinch, Weeks wasn’t landing anything on the 24-year-old.
With an 8-0 record and five finishes on his pre-fight record, Garry was obviously looking for the stoppage and he opened up the third round with a nice right kick to Weeks’ face.
Garry almost doubled Weeks’ important strikes midway through the final round and he was skillfully using his length to escape Weeks’ relentless pressure.
Hailed as “The Future,” Garry delivered a varied game that gives fight fans every reason to get excited about what he could do.
He goes 2-0 in the UFC and 9-0 overall. In a welterweight division led by Kamaru Usman right now, Garry’s height, length, smart defense and ranged offense make him a dangerous proportion as he moves up the welterweight division.
Garry has said in the past that McGregor inspired him to try MMA and just as The Notorious took over, Garry calls his UFC career part two of the takeover.
In the octagon after his win over Weeks, Garry announced he and his wife are expecting their first child at the end of this year – congratulations to the happy couple.
