UEFA chief explains Russia’s Euro 2024 ban — RT Sport News

Aleksander Ceferin commented after Russia were deprived of the chance to qualify for the next European Championship

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin expressed hope that Russian football teams will return to international competitions as soon as possible, but defended the ban imposed on the country for Euro 2024 qualification.

UEFA confirmed on Tuesday that the Russian men’s national team will not be included in the Euro 2024 qualifying draw in Frankfurt on October 9.

The move means Russia is effectively barred from entering the tournament itself, which will be held in ten German cities in June and July 2024.

“It’s not today’s decision. The decision regarding the Russian national and club teams and their suspension has been taken “until further notice”, which means that until we decide otherwise, it will remain in place. Ceferin explained after a UEFA Executive Committee meeting in Hvar, Croatia.

“It means we don’t have to make a decision every time another competition comes up.”

UEFA and its global counterpart FIFA initially banned all Russian teams in February after the start of Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine – sanctions which UEFA extended in May.

Ceferin said his organization hopes the conflict in Ukraine will end “as soon as possible,” and that Russia could then return to UEFA competitions.

“But the situation as it is, we can’t even discuss it,” added the Slovenian.

It was also revealed this week that Ceferin shared a call with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, in which the leader thanked the UEFA president. “for the support of our athletes and an unwavering, uncompromising stance.”

Ahead of UEFA’s confirmation that Russia would be left out of Euro 2024 qualifying, Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) President Andrey Pavelko took to social media to express his joy at the imminent announcement.

“The Russians have nothing to prepare” writes Pavelko.“At least until 2024 they will not participate in official international football competitions.”

The UAF previously called for Russia to be excluded from the qualifying draw. It was also reported last weekend that UEFA had come under pressure from the interior minister of tournament host Germany Nancy Faeser.

Faeser had called for Belarus to be excluded from qualifying with Russia, although UEFA continued its policy of allowing the Belarusian team to compete on the condition that ‘home’ matches were played at neutral venues. Belarus will be separated from Ukraine in the Euro 2024 draw.

Russian men’s national team manager Valery Karpin says the decision on Euro 2024 is expected but the consequence is that his team will miss another major tournament after being left out of World Cup qualification of Qatar 2022 earlier this year.

The Russian Football Union (RFU) has already appealed against UEFA and FIFA bans rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland, but said on Tuesday it was considering further legal action.
