Uddhav government in trouble as 11 Shiv Sena Mlas led by Eknath Shinde become ‘inaccessible’

In a major shake-up for the government of Uddhav Thackeray in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena leader and Minister of State for Urban Development and Public Works Eknath Shinde has reportedly moved into a hotel in Surat of Gujarat with 10 party MPs .

The rebel deputies would be accommodated at the Le Meridien hotel in Surat and would be “unreachable”. Shinde will likely address the media at 2 p.m. from Surat.

On Monday, the ruling Maha Vikas Agahdi (MVA) coalition suffered a setback in the state Legislative Council polls by losing one of the six seats it was contesting.

The Bharatiya Janata Party succeeded in electing its additional candidate for the post of MLC, defeating the preferred first candidate of the Congress, Chandrakant Handore.

The saffron party would have obtained 20 additional votes and it now lacks 11 deputies to overthrow the Uddhav Thackeray government. This makes Shinde “unreachable” a worrying factor for the Shiv Sena, National Congress Party (NCP) and Congress.

Prior to the election of Rajya Sabha, the strength of the MVA government was 170, which was reduced to 162 with some MPs supporting the BJP candidate. After the election of the MLC, the strength of the MVA government is further reduced to 151, with 11 MPs having voted in favor of the BJP.

“No comment should be made on such things, otherwise what is the point of being unapproachable,” said Union Minister and BJP leader Narayan Rane.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray called an urgent meeting of all Shiv Sena MPs at noon. All MPs were strictly requested to remain present at the meeting. NCP supremo Sharad Pawar also called a meeting of all his MPs today.
