Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC) released data showing that U.S. travel agencies’ airline ticket sales last month rose 10% from August 2022 levels to just over $8 billion.
Passenger travel for the month reached its highest level compared to pre-pandemic years, with total passenger travel in August 2023 representing 94% of August 2019 levels.
“The positive travel trends in August match what we are hearing from the largest airlines about the strength of air travel demand,” said Chuck Thackston, managing director of data science and research at BOW. “Travelers continue to benefit from lower airfares, particularly in the U.S. domestic market. »
August marked the third consecutive month that the average price of a domestic round-trip airline ticket in the United States declined. The average ticket price was $514 for the month, down 3% from July 2023 and 2% from August 2022.
Additionally, ancillary sales increased 75 percent year over year to $24 million. Ancillary transactions increased by 52 percent to 378,565 during the same period. This includes fees for products and services such as upgraded seats, checked baggage, an unaccompanied minor and a pet in the cabin.
These results are based on monthly sales data ending August 31, 2023, from 10,467 U.S. retail and corporate travel agencies, satellite ticket printing offices and travel agencies online.
Results do not include sales of tickets purchased directly from airlines. More detailed information is available on ARC’s sales statistics page.
