U.S. to reopen land border to Canadians next month

The unanswered question is the precise date in November when the United States will ease return restrictions for visitors from Canada.

The Biden administration has been under intense pressure – on both sides of the border – for months to remove travel restrictions for vaccinated travelers at land entry points.

Canada began welcoming fully vaccinated U.S. visitors on August 9. More than 80 percent of Canadians aged 12 and over are fully immunized, giving the country one of the highest rates in the world.

Canada has tightened its rules to further encourage vaccination rates to rise even more. Last week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled measures that make Covid vaccines mandatory for Canadian officials as well as workers and passengers in the federally regulated rail, marine and air sectors.

US border restrictions have been in place since March 2020. But Canadians, even the unvaccinated, have been allowed to travel to the United States since the start of the pandemic.

Higgins told the Buffalo News on Tuesday that Jeff Zients, the White House’s Covid response coordinator, had informed him of the reopening. The article says the restrictions will be lifted in early November.
