Tyson Fury was impressed with teammate Daniel Dubois’ victory over Trevor Bryan this weekend.
The Gypsy King retired after beating Dillian Whyte at Wembley in April, but the 33-year-old is yet to vacate the WBC heavyweight championship and remains one of boxing’s biggest names.
While he is undoubtedly the jewel in Frank Warren’s crown, Joe Joyce is also a fixture for the WBO heavyweight title and Dubois has now put himself in a position to fight for the WBA (super) title. heavyweights, a belt held by Oleksandr Usyk who takes on Anthony Joshua. again this summer.
Dubois did his part by getting a fourth-round knockout of Trevor Bryan last Saturday and Frank Warren told talkSPORT that Fury was impressed.
“I was talking to Tyson about it yesterday, we talked about it a lot and Tyson was really impressed with what he did, as was his dad, John. John is a big Daniel fan,” Warren said.
“He’s a young man, so of course he’ll be there. Tyson is now 32/33. Joshua is 33/34 years old. What is Usyk now? Joe Joyce is about 34 now, he’s in a mandatory position with the WBO. So Daniel is the young man among them all,” Warren said of 24-year-old Dubois.
“He won the WBA heavyweight title. What happens is if you unify the title, the WBA makes you a super champion and when you’re a super champion you don’t have to do any mandatory challenges for 18 months.
“So what happens is the guys in the number one, number two, number three positions, they’re just sitting there. They don’t get a chance to fight for the title.
“So now he will fight the super champion. Daniel Dubois has earned this right. He is in a fabulous position to face the winner of Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk,” Warren explained.
Dubois has a history with many of the best heavyweights in the game today through past workouts in the gym.
Beyond that, Dubois believes he’s grown as a fighter in recent years and is now ready to challenge the elite where it counts, inside the ring.
“I’ve faced most of the top guys in the division, but I’ve come of age now. I’m mature and it’s time to step in and be the man. Now I’m ready to take this step and keep going,” Dubois told talkSPORT.
Dubois, 18-1, will be a keen watcher for Joshua against Usyk, a clash Matchroom is expected to announce this week for Saudi Arabia on August 20.
