SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Two of Governor Gavin Newsom’s children have tested positive for the coronavirus and his family is following “all COVID protocols,” his office said on Friday.

“The Newsoms continue to support the masking of unvaccinated people indoors to stop the spread and advocate for vaccination as the most effective way to end this pandemic,” said a statement from Erin Mellon, door – speech from the governor’s office.

The brief statement said Newsom, his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom and their two other children had since tested negative for COVID-19 but provided no further details, including how they were exposed.

The governor’s four children are under 12, the age at which children are allowed to be vaccinated under federal regulations.

The announcement comes just days after Newsom easily defeated an effort to recall him that was in part driven by the COVID-19 pandemic that has shut down much of the state for more than a year. The recall gained momentum after Newsom was surprised in November at a lobbyist’s birthday party at a posh Napa Valley restaurant – unmasked and in a big party that violated his own social distancing orders .

However, Newsom received around 64% of the vote in Tuesday’s election, according to preliminary results.

Republicans who came forward to replace Newsom opposed the mask and vaccine mandates, but Newsom doubled them down and argued that GOP opponents would threaten crucial efforts to slow the spread of the virus, calling the recall ” question of life or death “.
