Two people have died and 23 have been hospitalized after a boat capsized off the southern California coast on Sunday, authorities said.
The incident was reported just before 10:30 a.m. near San Diego, city firefighters said in a statement. The deceased passengers were not immediately identified.
The department said one person suffered chest compressions after being rescued.
It was not known why the boat capsized, who the passengers were or what boat they were on. They were taken to at least eight local hospitals, the department said, although it is not clear what type of injuries they sustained.
Local and federal authorities responded to the incident, the department said.
