When customers first dive into aesthetic creations, they’ll find wholesome ingredients, elegant flavor profiles, and thoughtful attention.
Besties since high school, Malaka and Eric knew they wanted to be business owners together. In fact, before opening a bakery, they almost entered a completely different industry.
“Erica and I started the business almost 8 years ago after I came to her with the idea that we should sell clothes,” Malaka explained. “Erica pooped that idea and said we should cook instead.”
The duo grew up cooking with their family and decided to incorporate centuries-old recipes into their California offerings. In addition to wedding cakes, Erica and Malaka bake seasonal pies, cupcakes, pies and more.
Two Chicks in the Mix operates in Los Angeles and the Bay Area with a storefront in West Oakland.
“We don’t have any formal industry training, we’ve never run a business before,” Malaka said. “So I think we’re both very proud of ourselves and how far we’ve come.”
The co-founders hope to not only spread some sweetness, but also inspire more black bakers to start their wedding cake business.
“Especially in the wedding industry, we realized that there weren’t a lot of black chefs or black bakers being featured,” Erica said. “We wanted to encourage other black women or black bakers, in general, to enter the industry.”
