Tsunami warnings issued for Tonga and Samoa following volcanic eruption

The eruption of the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano has been ongoing since Friday, according to the United States Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The Tonga Meteorological Service also issued advisories of heavy rain, flash flooding and high winds over land and coastal waters.

Nearby, New Zealand’s official weather service said its weather stations across the country observed “overpressure” on Saturday night following the eruption.

The volcano had been active since Dec. 20, but was declared inactive on Jan. 11, according to CNN affiliate RNZ.
